On 26 January 2005 Leaf Chronicle, a Tennessee paper reported:
A new study released today shows that the Transcendental Meditation Technique (TM) can reduce high blood pressure and the use of anti-hypertensive medication in black Americans. It is the first long-term study of its kind. With the use of TM there was a 23 per cent relative reduction in the use of medication to treat hypertension.
It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring
fulfilment to the field of health.
The study, paid for by the National Institutes for Health, will be published in the American Journal of Hypertension.
The article noted that during the one-year study, subjects were assigned to receive either Transcendental Meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, or conventional health education classes. The results showed that the Transcendental Meditation Technique had distinct advantages over the other treatments, according to information released by the Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention.
Over the long term, the blood pressure reductions achieved could result in 35 to 45 per cent less stroke and 20 to 25 per cent less coronary heart disease, experts say.
The article went on to list the web address for www.tm.org. and gave the (888) LEARN TM for those interested in finding a qualified instructor.
