IMPERIAL, the company known for its leadership in mobility and transport, is making computer training accessible to hundreds of people in remote rural areas. The vehicle, which will serve as a mobile computer laboratory providing computer skills training to people in remote disadvantaged communities across South Africa, was donated to the Papillon Foundation.

Speaking at the handover ceremony Greg Wedgewood of Imperial Refrigerated Services said 'Imperial supports Papillon's work in achieving successful social transformation through accredited community based training. Such skills transfer greatly enhances the employment prospects of people who would not have access to training facilities.'

The Papillon Foundation has provided computer skills to 8,508 unemployed community members since 2002 in subjects as diverse as Computer ICDL, project management and planning, call-centre training, and Enterprise Development.

Using the Imperial mobile computer lab, the Papillon foundation will offer 'Train the trainer' courses at schools and community centres which have IT facilities but no teachers to provide IT skills. The foundation can also assist with refurbished computers to establish new training centres.

On receiving the vehicle, Stephen Smith of the Papillon Foundation said 'A dire need for computer literacy exists in our country and we are thrilled to accept the keys to this special set of wheels which will change the lives of many and ultimately help to uplift them from abject poverty.'

A posting at The Papillon Foundation's Facebook page on 20 September reads:

Ground breaking news!!! A 2 year struggle to get this vision going and now it is finally starting to happen. A great thank you to Imperial Holdings for donating the truck that will now be converted into a computer training lab. Said truck will visit and train 12 new computer trainers in all poor areas in South Africa. Papillon will also supply the new trainers with computers to train all in their communities.
