At the 20th International Congress of Vedanta, held at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, scholars gathered to discuss all aspects of Indian philosophy.
The keynote address given by Lothar Pirc focused on the unique and profound contributions of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to the study of Vedanta and to the world.
Mr Pirc talked about 'Maharishi's most important project: training a large group of Vedic Pandits in the centre of India who practise technologies of consciousness and technologies to create world peace'.
The Maharishi Vedic Pandits practise Transcendental Meditation and its advanced techniques including Yogic Flying together every day, and they also perform Yagyas.*
These technologies were brought to light from the Vedic literature and shared with the world by Maharishi, who established the goal of bringing permanent peace to the world. Maharishi explained that these technologies have the ability to end violence worldwide, Mr Pirc said. They are the practical application of the ultimate knowledge of life in Vedanta.
At the conference, he showed a video of thousands of specially trained expert Pandits chanting the verses of the Veda together. The audience was hushed and deeply impressed, he said.
He added that the Pandits practise Maharishi's technologies of consciousness, because it is important that they experience the field of inner bliss consciousness, Atma (the Self); 'from that silent level the benefits of the Vedic recitations [are] much more powerful.'
There are 1,500 Pandits in the group at the centre (Brahmasthan) of India and 4,300 Pandits in training. Accommodation for 2,200 Pandits at the Brahmasthan has been completed, while accommodation for 6,800 more is under construction.
He said that the ultimate fulfilment of Vedanta is individual enlightenment and world peace.
Dr Pirc concluded, 'Vedanta is the highest knowledge. If it is implemented together with all the other Vedic branches of knowledge in its completeness on a large scale, it can take life from suffering to bliss, from disease to perfect health, and [from] terrorism and wars to world peace.'

* Maharishi Yagyas are precise Vedic performances, conducted by Maharishi Vedic Pandits, to create specific life-supporting influences for individuals and nations from the field of pure consciousness, the field of total natural law, which is enlivened in the Pandits' consciousness through their daily practice of Transcendental Meditation and its advanced techniques.
