After describing Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's initiatives to create world peace, Dr Ramani Ayer went on to discuss Maharishi's many lasting contributions in the United States.

At an event in Chicago, Dr Ayer, a prominent businessman and philanthropist,* told the largely Indo-American audience of nearly 1,000 about Maharishi's plan to establish 9,000 Maharishi Vedic Panditspeace-creating experts—in India. But Maharishi's vision extended much further even than that, he explained.

Dr Ayer showed a photo of the unique town of Fairfield, Iowa, in which many of the residents practise Transcendental Meditation.

Then he showed a slide of the campus near Fairfield where 1,000 Vedic Pandits are currently living and practising 'Yoga and Yagya'.** This group was established by Maharishi as part of the Invincible America Assembly—a large group of people practising Transcendental Meditation and the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi programme, to create peace and prosperity for the nation. The goal is to have 2,000 in this group, of which 1,250 would be Maharishi Vedic Pandits who also perform special peace-creating Maharishi Yagyas every day.

'By the middle of this year we're hoping to house 1,250 Pandits,' Dr Ayer said. 'These are Pandits who are trained in India, they come to the US, they practise this Yoga and Yagya, and then they return to India in two or three years,' replaced by new Pandits coming from India.

There is also a city near Fairfield that makes use of many practical applications of Vedic knowledge brought to light by Maharishi. Maharishi Vedic City has been designed according to principles of Maharishi Vedic architecture, Dr Ayer said. 'This is a city that was conceived by Maharishi in interpreting Sthapatya Veda (Vedic architecture) and bringing the knowledge of the Veda to that community.

'We have Vedic homes. These are homes that are built in conformity with Sthapatya Veda, and the individuals living in these homes actually experience the
benefits of Sthapatya Veda'—including clearer thinking, less stress, more restful sleep, better health, and increased good fortune.

There are also Consciousness-Based Education institutions—Maharishi School and Maharishi University of Management, where students can receive a conventional education while practising Transcendental Meditation twice daily as part of their school routine.

'We have an Ayurvedic health centre to revive Ayurveda. Maharishi revived not only Vedanta . . . but he revived Ayurveda, he revived Jyotish (Vedic astrology). He has revived Yagya and Yoga and all the rich attributes of Vedanta,'*** said Dr Ayer.

'We also have a Vedic organic farm, where plants are grown conforming to Vedic agriculture. The fruits of all of this are consumed by the students of the university.'

Dr Ayer concluded by telling the audience, 'I invite you to visit this community. . . . This is Maharishi's great legacy.'

* Dr Ayer was the first Indo-American CEO of a Fortune 500 company, serving as Chairman and CEO of Hartford Financial Services Group for 13 years. Now retired, he is working with the Global Peace Initiative to realize Maharishi's goal of creating world peace through establishing large groups of peace-creating Maharishi Vedic Pandits in India and elsewhere.

** Yoga and Yagya: Yoga refers to the daily group practice of Maharishi's technologies of consciousness to create world peace—Transcendental Meditation and its advanced techniques including Yogic Flying. Maharishi Yagyas are precise Vedic performances conducted by Maharishi Vedic Pandits, to create specific life-supporting influences for individuals, nations, and the world from the field of pure consciousness, the Unified Field of total natural law, which is enlivened in the Pandits' consciousness through their daily advanced meditation practice.

*** Vedanta is the aspect of Vedic wisdom which brings out the ultimate knowledge of life—Totality, Brahm, the essence of everything in creation. Dr Girish Momaya, Director of Maharishi Vedic University, Netherlands, recently presented Maharishi's explanation that Veda means knowledge, and Vedanta is where the quest to know ends—where 'knowing That, there is nothing more to be known'. It is the highest knowledge, the ultimate knowledge of life. 'Maharishi brought the light of Vedanta to the world through direct experience of Atma, the Self, transcendental consciousness, through his simple, natural, scientifically validated technique of Transcendental Meditation,' Dr Momaya said.
