In a year-end report about the success of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's technologies of consciousness in Iceland, several positive trends were noted.
Iceland is a small country, with a population of just 320,000 people. This small population, though, has really embraced the Transcendental Meditation Technique in the past few years.
In fact, following a visit to Iceland by award-winning film director David Lynch, Transcendental Meditation teachers there have instructed more than 1,300 people in the last two and a half years. This large new group of meditators makes up about four tenths of 1% of the country's population.*
With this great expansive success, Transcendental Meditation teachers have also recently been focusing on communicating regularly with and giving more knowledge to those who have learned to meditate.
This has been taking place through a series of regular weekly meetings in the Transcendental Meditation centre in the capital of Reykjavík and in two suburbs of the city. In these meetings meditators can have their meditation checked, and gain new knowledge for development of consciousness, better health, and other benefits. The meetings also include group meditations which contribute to increasing social coherence countrywide, an important aim of the organization and a pressing need in Iceland.
Several schools in Iceland are interested in implementing Transcendental Meditation and Consciousness-Based Education. The interest has arisen from teachers and school administrators who practise Transcendental Meditation and would like to share its profound benefits with their students and fellow faculty members.
In what has been described as 'a society deeply in crisis and transition', the steps of progress achieved by the Transcendental Meditation organization in the last year have resulted from the teachers' one-pointed focus on creating an upsurge of coherence in national life through Maharishi's programmes.
* In 1974, scientific research found that in cities and towns all over the world where as little as 1% of the population practises the Transcendental Meditation Technique, the trend of rising crime rate is reversed, indicating increasing order and harmony. Scientists named this phenomenon of rising coherence in the collective consciousness of the whole society the Maharishi Effect, in honour of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who first predicted it in 1960.
