Relations between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War improved through the peaceful, harmonious influence of coherence-creating groups of people practising Transcendental Meditation and its advanced programmes, scientific research shows.
Two studies, one published in the Proceedings of the American Statistical Association in 1990 and the other presented at the annual meeting of the American Statistical Association in 1991, examined data maintained separately by the University of Zurich, Switzerland.
The study is also featured in Scientific Research on Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Programme: Collected Papers, Volume 6.
Researchers utilized monthly records of positive gestures and overtures as well as negative behaviours and threats during a serious time in the Cold War.
The findings were significant, said Dr Michael Dillbeck, an expert on Transcendental Meditation research, who is one of the editors of Collected Papers Volume 5, and the editor of Volume 6.
When the size of the group practising Transcendental Meditation and the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme, including Yogic Flying, was large enough—the square root of one per cent of the population—then the United States behaved more positively toward the Soviet Union. When the group was several hundred people larger, then the Soviet Union's behaviour was better toward the US—independent of positive behaviour from the US.
'This shows the degree to which the size of the group of Yogic Flyers was a crucial element in maintaining peace, and generating peace in the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union, which culminated in the end of the Cold War,' Dr Dillbeck said.
