During the inauguration of the Transcendental Meditation Teacher Training Course in MERU, Holland on 4 June, Dr Bevan Morris, Prime Minister of the Global Country of World Peace, gave a historical perspective on the training of Transcendental Meditation Teachers by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
In 1960, having been teaching Transcendental Meditation in the United States, Maharishi considered how he could spiritually regenerate the whole world, even in one generation.
Upon calculation with scientists and engineers who had learnt Transcendental Meditation, Maharishi realized that it would not be possible to accomplish the goal just by going alone from place to place, as he had been doing. So he decided to 'multiply himself', Dr Morris said.
At that time only Maharishi himself could teach Transcendental Meditation, Dr Morris explained. Maharishi did all the teaching and was the only teacher, so 'the idea that he could duplicate himself seemed surprising to those present with him in the beginning, since they recognized him as a great sage without precedent in the world,' he said.
He explained that Maharishi therefore systematized every part of the teaching, so that it was precisely laid out for the teachers to teach exactly as Maharishi himself did. In this way Maharishi 'made it possible for the perfection of his teaching to be spoken by the teachers, given by the teachers, and therefore produce the effect he had been producing', Dr Morris said.
The first Transcendental Meditation Teacher Training Course was held in Rishikesh, India, from April to July of 1961, almost 50 years ago. In the early 1970s many thousands of people in the United States and Europe attended Teacher Training Courses, and since then many such teacher training courses have been held around the world.
Global Good News will soon feature articles about participants in the recent Teacher Training Course in Thailand; and about those on the current course in Holland, many of whom are longtime practitioners of the Transcendental Meditation Programme who worked closely with Maharishi for many years.
