A recent documentary filmed by David Lynch Foundation Television (DLF.TV) features the good effects found by inmates and staff in a prison in the northwestern United States, in just the first few months they've been practising the Transcendental Meditation Technique.
The programme in the prison is in its beginning stages, said Dr Robert Roth,* Vice President of the David Lynch Foundation, but already inmates and staff are seeing pronounced results after a few months of TM practice.
The documentary portrays several inmates, who describe their experience with Transcendental Meditation as a 'free feeling—taking me away from the prison', and 'an opportunity to get to know who I really am'.
Prison administrators were equally enthusiastic, one saying that Transcendental Meditation makes inmates and staff more healthy and calm. Another staff member said that he believes TM will 'break down the barrier that separates staff from inmates, getting to what is common between us all'.
A research director said that he believes practising Transcendental Meditation will bring out the strengths and goodness from inside every inmate, and that this is the key to creating better public safety for communities.
The medical doctor working for the prison noted that Transcendental Meditation allows the inmates to develop greater compassion, and that compassion makes a person more healthy. 'The bottom line is that if they can practise TM, they can stay out of prison.'
Dr Roth reported that this doctor, a prominent physician in the US prison system, is in favor of implementing the technique in prisons throughout the world, and would like to organize a national conference in which experts will speak on the benefits of Transcendental Meditation for health.
* Dr Roth's report was featured on the 6 April 2010 Maharishi Global Family Chat, broadcast daily via Internet webcast on the Maharishi Channel, Channel 3. Podcasts of the daily Global Family Chat (audio track) are also now available for automatic download, via an RSS feed.
