On 28 March 2010 TheDay.com - Connecticut, USA reported:
Retired military leaders support a scientifically verified, peaceful means of defence utilizing the Transcendental Meditation Programme.
It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring
fulfilment to the field of world peace.
The authors state that the 'underlying cause of war is accumulated social stress. Stress builds up. Differences arise. Groups take sides. Mediation fails to resolve the differences. Enemies form and arm.'
While armed conflict may 'temporarily solve the problem for the winner, the underlying social stress is increased, fueling more violence and more terrorists,' the authors continue.
'Today, an opportunity exists to overcome this cycle of conflict by deploying a scientifically verified technology of defense that neutralizes social stress.'
The Transcendental Meditation Programme is such a technology. 'In more than 50 studies published in scientific journals, Transcendental Meditation (TM) has been documented to powerfully reduce violence and criminal activity and even to calm open warfare. '
This effect—which has been called the Maharishi Effect—is achieved when a sufficient number of people practise Transcendental Meditation together. Repeated research has shown this number to be at least the square root of one per cent of the population of a given region—a city, nation, or even the world.
A group of only about 1,750 could create a powerful influence of peace and coherence for the entire United States, the authors report.
'As part of its responsibility to protect the nation, the U.S. military is obligated to thoroughly examine scientifically proven methods for preventing war and terrorism,' the authors conclude. 'All that is necessary is to provide the proper training for a group of military personnel or indeed, any large group within the country.'
