In the 1990s, more than one per cent of the population of Estonia learned the Transcendental Meditation Programme.
Achieving this threshold percentage is sufficient to create the Maharishi Effect and ensure the growth of positive trends for the country, according to leaders of the Global Country of World Peace in the nation.
Scientific research has found that in cities and towns all over the world where as little as one per cent of the population practises Transcendental Meditation, the trend of rising crime rate is reversed, indicating increasing order and harmony.
Research scientists named this phenomenon—rising coherence in the collective consciousness of the whole society through practice of Transcendental Meditation—the Maharishi Effect, in honour of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who predicted it as early as 1960.
Dr Jaan Suurkula, National Director of Estonia for the Global Country, attributed recent positive trends to the fact that so many people in the nation have learned Transcendental Meditation.*
According to the international financial journal Financial Times, Estonia has weathered the global economic crisis very calmly and creatively, drawing renewed investment.
The Financial Times contrasts Estonia with its seriously troubled neighbours and several other European countries, stating that the nation's success is particularly remarkable considering it has no significant natural resources on which to rely, Dr Suurkula said.
'The people have handled a rough time in a very constructive and creative way,' he said
Dr Suurkula discussed numerous other positive trends that have been growing over the last 20 years in diverse fields—including recognition for educational excellence, IT expertise, Olympic athletes, economic expansion, and freedom of the press.
* Dr Suurkula's report was featured on the 4 February 2010 Maharishi Global Family Chat, broadcast daily via Internet webcast on the Maharishi Channel, Channel 3. Podcasts of the daily Global Family Chat (audio track) are also now available for automatic download, via an RSS feed.
