In the conclusion of his address accepting the Doctor of World Peace degree, Honoris causa, recently conferred by Maharishi University of Management (M.U.M.), Dr Robert Roth spoke of the importance of a great team, saying that this award was an acknowledgment of the dedication of all those at the university and in the community.
Dr Roth gave his address during an inspiring and delightful celebration on 12 November 2009 at (M.U.M.), in Fairfield, Iowa, USA. (Please see Part I of Dr Roth's speech, 'Teaching Transcendental Meditation: The tools to create a better world'.)
Earlier in his talk, Dr Roth told of two big ideas that shaped his life—his childhood dream to play professional baseball, and the desire to save the world. What do these ideas have in common? 'Both are team sports,' he went on to say. 'You can't do it on your own. . . . The players [on a great baseball team] have their own unique skills. Everyone is focussed and dedicated. Everyone plays really well together. Everyone has a lot of fun, and we win!
'The same goes for saving the world,' he continued, 'but about a billion times more. . . . When Dr Hagelin* told me a few weeks ago that I would receive this award, . . . I felt incredibly, deeply, indescribably honoured. But I also felt that this high honour is, in fact, . . . directed toward all of us,' he said, speaking of the entire M.U.M. community. 'It is an acknowledgment of what we have all been doing for months, years, and decades—as a team—to create peace.'
'Maharishi Mahesh Yogi once said that two of the fundamentals of success are conviction and persistence. Conviction is a vertical thing. You catch an idea. . . . You hold onto it and never, ever let it go. Persistence is a horizontal thing. It's something you do over time. It's one thing to believe deeply about something. It's another thing to have the energy, focus, creativity and intelligence—and support of Natural Law—to make it happen.
'Look what Maharishi did with his thought in 1957 to spiritually regenerate the world. That cosmic thought was held with such unfathomably deep conviction, and pursued with such invincible perseverance, that the world has been irrevocably changed forever.'
He continued, 'It is my deepest conviction—and I'm not being dreamy or dewy-eyed here—that the university will soon rise to completely fulfil its destiny, and not just to save the world, but to create Heaven on Earth.'
Addressing Dr Bevan Morris (President of M.U.M, and Prime Minister of the Global Country of World Peace), Dr John Hagelin,* Dr David Lynch, members of the Board of Trustees, and faculty, he concluded, 'I gladly accept this doctorate on behalf of all of us in this hall, in this community. I take it not as a sign of something I have accomplished in the past, but rather as a sign that I am now prepared to do something great in the future. I thank you for this highest honour, but most especially, I thank you for the honour of being on your team.'
Following Dr Roth's speech were delightful comments by Sam Lieb and Heather Hartnett, two members of the team Dr Roth works with at the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace, which he serves as Vice President.
The evening concluded with Dr Craig Pearson, M.U.M. Executive Vice President, announcing that the university Trustees had appointed Dr Roth a member of the Board. Dr Pearson then paid tribute to Dr Roth in the form of a delightful poem masterfully weaving baseball, humour, and Pure Knowledge.
* World renowned quantum physicist Dr John Hagelin is President of the David Lynch Foundation; Executive Director of the International Center for Invincible Defense and the Center for Leadership Performance, both based in New York City; Director of the Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy at Maharishi University of Management; Minister of Science and Technology of the Global Country of World Peace; and Raja (Administrator) of Invincible America.
