by Alarik Arenander, PhD and Jonathan Lipman, AIA

On 21 November 2007 The Global Intelligencer reported:
The benefits of Vedic Architecture in accord with Natural Law are predicted by the ancient Vedic texts, and are now being verified by personal experience and scientific research.
It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring
fulfilment to the fields of world peace and science.
'Vedic architecture is considered the oldest and perhaps the most systematic of the various architectural traditions . . . ,' the article reported.
The article noted the 'overwhelmingly positive subjective experiences of the thousands of people world-wide who report . . . improvements in well-being, physical health, family harmony, and financial success' which are some of the influences of Vedic Architecture specified by the Vedic texts.
Scientific research is also beginning to verify some of the benefits of Vedic Architecture. 'Vedic Architecture infers and Maharishi has predicted that brain cells are sensitive to magnetic field orientation and that the human brain is sensitive to and responds to the cardinal orientations, in particular and preferentially to the rising sun,' the article stated.
US doctor Veronica Butler, MD, conducted a survey of her patients and found that their sleep orientation affected their well-being. She reported that patients who 'sleep in north-facing beds suffer from significantly more depression and anxiety than do those who sleep in beds without this orientation.'
Research on animals at Ohio State University confirmed these results. Animals facing north when they slept had increased levels of stress hormones and were more aggressive, while those facing east to sleep had lower levels of stress hormones and exhibited more harmonious behaviour.
The orientation of a building is a key principle of Maharishi Vedic Architecture. Dr Butler's survey also showed benefits for patients with east-facing or north-facing homes. These patients had fewer financial difficulties and better mental health—especially compared to those living in south-facing homes.
Another study showed '75% more burglaries in south-facing houses than in houses facing east, west or north,' the article reported.
A carefully controlled comprehensive study of the benefits for businesses in buildings that feature multiple principles of Vedic Architecture is currently underway in Denmark. Preliminary data has been compiled from thirty of the 100 randomly chosen companies—and it shows greater profits for those businesses that are more in accord with the principles of Vedic Architecture.
