Though it focuses on providing relief for those who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress, Operation Warrior Wellness also offers programmes to create resilient individuals.
Transcendental Meditation is a stress-busting technique which not only offers cost-effective and prompt relief from traumatic stress, but new studies are showing that it can help prevent the formation of Post-Traumatic Stress in the first place.
The concept of resilience is one that is very important to the military, police, firefighters, and other first responders. Anyone who works in frequently stressful and unpredictable situations needs a way to constructively deal with stress. But what if a technology such as Transcendental Meditation can prevent the accumulation of stress in the first place?
This was a question that Norwich University, the first private military college in the United States, set out to answer.
Research is currently underway at the university, and initial findings, after one year, have been promising.
The preliminary study was a controlled study using cadets, young students aspiring to careers in the military. One group learned Transcendental Meditation and other did not (though the control group did eventually learn after the year was over). The research took place over the course of a school year, from about September to May.
The findings were grouped into two categories: Reduced negative emotions, and increased positive traits.
Findings in the first category were that emotions like stress, anxiety, and depression all decreased. In the second category, those practising Transcendental Meditation experienced an increase in constructive thought, positive coping, and resilience.
A Transcendental Meditation teacher who works with Operation Warrior Wellness added that these findings, already significant, are just preliminary research taken over the span of one school year. Norwich University is continuing to do research, he said, on the effect of Transcendental Meditation on resilience and the prevention of Post-Traumatic Stress.
