This past weekend, 4-6 December, a conference on 'Brainwaves and Transcendental Meditation: Basic Science and Global Application' was held in MERU, Holland. The goal of the course was to train participants to explain—and demonstrate using an EEG machine—the unique brain wave patterns found during the practice of the Transcendental Meditation Programme.

The conference was organized and led by experts including Dr Robert Keith Wallace, pioneering researcher on the Transcendental Meditation Technique; Dr Fred Travis, Director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition at Maharishi University of Management; and US neuroscientist Dr Alarik Arenander.

In the opening session, Dr Wallace and Dr Travis discussed how brain functioning is associated with conscious experience and states of consciousness,* said Dr Peter Swan, Minister of Communication of the Global Country of World Peace.**

The EEG machine visibly demonstrates changes in brain functioning during the practice of Transcendental Meditation, which otherwise 'one cannot see or sense in . . . an objective way,' Dr Swan said.

'When people see, in real time particularly, changes in the functioning of the brain . . . ,' Dr Swan continued, 'then they see: 'My goodness—he or she started meditating, and immediately the brain became so coherent, so orderly, so harmonious.'' '

'Then they can really understand, or have a feeling for the power of Transcendental Meditation,' he commented.

A small and very powerful EEG machine that is ideal for such live demonstrations was presented at the conference.

Participants from a number of countries in Europe—including 10 doctors—filled the conference hall in MERU. Another 60 participants joined the conference online via the Internet. Everyone found it 'stimulating to hear all this knowledge, which is so current and so powerful at this time,' Dr Swan said.

Raja Peter Warburton, Raja of Invincible Great Britain for the Global Country of World Peace, commented that when Dr Travis and other experts have presented live EEG demonstrations in countries around the world, the response has been tremendous enthusiasm.

This conference will enable many more such demonstrations to be offered, and will be key to expanding understanding of the benefits of Transcendental Meditation and its advanced techniques, including Yogic Flying, in the fields of education, business, and every area of life, Raja Peter and Dr Swan concluded.

* Maharishi Mahesh Yogi has explained that beyond the familiar states of waking, dreaming, and sleeping are four higher states of consciousness—Transcendental Consciousness, Cosmic Consciousness, God Consciousness, and Unity Consciousness—each bringing a new dimension of physiological functioning, experience, knowledge, and fulfilment.

** The report of Dr Swan and Raja Peter was featured on the 4 December 2009 Maharishi Global Family Chat, broadcast daily via Internet webcast on the Maharishi Channel, Channel 3. Podcasts of the daily Global Family Chat (audio track) are also available for automatic download, via an RSS feed.
