Dr Harald Harung, Associate Professor of Management, Oslo University College, Norway, and Dr Fred Travis, Director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition at Maharishi University of Management, have conducted research on peak performers in the fields of sport and business over the last five years. Dr Harung spoke recently* about the four dimensions of peak performance: brain integration, self-actualization, higher individual consciousness, and higher collective consciousness.
Describing this research, Dr Harung said that the first dimension of peak performance is increased brain integration. The second is psychological development or self-actualization, ego integration—which corresponds to an integrated, balanced ego and having actualized your own individual potential.
'Beyond this, there is a third dimension of peak performance,' he said, 'which is higher consciousness.' Higher consciousness has been shown to develop through the regular experience of Transcendental Consciousness during the practice of the Transcendental Meditation Programme.
'The fourth dimension of peak performance is higher collective consciousness,' said Dr Harung. Even in countries where there is disturbance, individuals can still be successful; but peak performance can be affected by the quality of collective consciousness.
He also pointed out that good health is an integral part of higher development. There are many different theories about higher development, but these are just aspects of higher development, he said. 'In higher development, there is better health, more happiness, more creativity, more self-sufficiency, and more invincibility. Anything you are looking for in life which is good and desirable, you find in this one dimension.'
Dr Harang commented that sometimes people may find it confusing to see that one technique of Transcendental Meditation can have effects in many different areas of life at the same time—in health, in social rehabilitation, performance, education, and so on—'but if we explain that it [affects] only one dimension—higher development—then it is much simpler for people to appreciate.'
He said that through extensive scientific research, the Transcendental Meditation and Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme have been shown to be a technology that produces the dimension of higher development most effectively.
He and Dr Travis are currently writing a book on the four dimensions of higher development and peak performance.
