Maharishi University of Management - The Review Translate This Article
8 December 2013
As a result of the recent approval by the accrediting organization for Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, USA, plans are shaping up to offer a new distance education Master of Science (MS) in Integrative Health next fall that will be offered to licensed health professionals.
Integrative health refers to the integration of evidenced-based traditional systems of natural medicine with conventional medicine.
MUM proposed the new program last spring during a visit by a team from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Approval was granted this fall.
The focus will be Maharishi Ayur-VedaSM, while also including introductions to other systems of medicine such as traditional Chinese medicine, homeopathy, chiropractic, and osteopathy.
Students in the new MS will be doctors, nurses, and other licensed medical professionals who want to expand their practice into the emerging field of integrative medicine, which is now offered by many hospitals, medical centers, and medical schools nationwide.
The three-year program will include 10 courses. One of those courses will comprise a week of in-residence instruction at MUM in each of the three years of the program.
The other courses will be taught via distance education and will include streaming video lectures, live webinars, readings, and quizzes.
Faculty will include Ayurvedic experts from India known as Vaidyas; MUM founding president and researcher Keith Wallace, PhD; Robert Schneider, MD, dean of Maharishi College of Perfect Health; Paul Morehead, PhD, associate chair of the Department of Physiology and Health; and Stuart Rothenberg, MD, clinical professor.
''I'm really excited about it,'' Dr. Wallace said. ''I think it's a great program and a stepping stone to our creating a medical school.''
The program will be offered in two phases. The first will be the track for licensed health professionals. A second phase, to come later, will be for those who are not already licensed professionals.
