The First International Symposium on Mind/Body Medicine in Ayurveda was held in Belgrade, Serbia, on 15-16 May. The event was organized by the Serbian Association for Ayurveda – Maharishi College for Perfect Health, Serbia; and Vanoushadi Vidhyapeet, India.
The symposium was organized to bring the knowledge of Ayurveda—the world's oldest, 'most authentic and comprehensive system of natural medicine' to health professionals in Serbia. Invited to attend were 'medical doctors, Vaidyas (Ayurvedic physicians from India), nurses, practitioners of traditional and natural medicine, pharmacists, ayurveda technicians, students of medicine, aroma therapists, and yoga and fitness experts'.
The symposium explored many facets of Ayurvedic knowledge, therapies, and products with the aim of making their health benefits more widely available through the health care system of Serbia and internationally.
Some of the core principles being presented were described on the symposium website:
'Mind/body medicine has emerged in the 20th century as one of the most essential paradigms in our understanding of human health; yet, through the cognition of ancient Vedic Rishis (seers), Ayurveda has known of this relationship since its very inception, establishing consciousness as the fundamental, transcendental reality at the basis of not only human health, but of all life as well.'
Speakers included leading physicians, researchers, and administrators in Maharishi Ayurveda* health care from India, Europe, and the USA.
The two-day programme featured a wide range of presentations on Ayurvedic health care, including pulse diagnosis, diet and daily routine, Panchakarma (rejuvenation therapy), and herbal products.
The topic of consciousness was explored from many different angles, including an address by renowned quantum physicist Dr John Hagelin** on 'Consciousness as the Unified Basis of Physical Creation: A Meeting Ground of Vedic Science and Modern Science'. Professors from Maharishi University of Management in the USA spoke about EEG brain research on Transcendental Meditation and other scientific research on mind/body medicine.
Other experts spoke on further areas of Vedic knowledge which are part of Maharishi Ayurveda, including Vastu (Vedic architecture) and aromatherapy.
Distinguished Vaidyas gave lectures and workshops on various aspects of the clinical practice of Ayurveda and its applications in treating specific diseases.
Also discussed was the possibility of establishing a regional educational and training centre for Maharishi Ayurveda and an Ayurveda health centre and clinic.
It was expected that many Serbian medical doctors would participate in the symposium for their continuing medical education. The symposium was accredited by the Health Council of Serbia, Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia. It was held in the City Hall of the Stari Grad municipality of Belgrade.
Global Good News will report more about the symposium programme.
