Dr Norman Rosenthal, who wrote the New York Times bestselling book, Transcendence, gave a talk recently about the recuperative powers of Transcendental Meditation in cases of addiction.
Dr Rosenthal spoke at a conference in Washington, D.C., on Stress, Meditation, Addictions, and Self-Recovery.
The conference was hosted by SStuart Rothenberg, MD, director of the Washington, D.C., Association of Health Professionals Practicing the Transcendental Meditation Program.*
He began, 'Tonight we'll have the pleasure of hearing from three eminent authorities with decades of experience in clinical practice and in research. Each will present a somewhat different angle and different aspect of this important and challenging area of addictions.'
Dr Rothenberg introduced Dr Rosenthal. 'Dr Norman Rosenthal is clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University School of Medicine. As a researcher for over twenty years at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Dr Rosenthal led the team which first described Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and its treatment with light therapy.
'Dr Rosenthal was awarded the prestigious Anna Monika Foundation research prize for his contribution to research in the treatment of depression,' Dr Rothenberg continued. 'He has been listed as one of the best doctors in America and one of the country's top psychiatrists.
'Dr Rosenthal and his work have been widely covered in the popular media and he has appeared on the Today Show, Good Morning America, National Public Radio, and many other forums. Dr Rosenthal has maintained a private practice of psychiatry in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area for over thirty years.
'He is the author or coauthor of over 200 professional articles and five popular books including Winter Blues, and his latest book, the New York Times bestseller, Transcendence: Healing and Transformation through Transcendental Meditation.'
It was this latest book, and the power of transcendence, that formed the subject of Dr Rosenthal's speech at the conference.
Dr Rothenberg explained, 'Dr Rosenthal will be speaking on the role of transcendence in the treatment and prevention of addictions.'
* Dr Rothenberg is also national medical director of the TM Health Professionals Association; and national medical director and director of post-graduate medical education of Maharishi Ayurveda Association of America (MAAA).
