Transcendental Meditation offers help for overcoming food addiction
Transcendental Meditation Program for Women Translate This Article
29 April 2012
The Transcendental Meditation technique has been found to be an effective tool for healing the addictive and emotional aspects of an eating disorder.
During TM practice, as the mind effortlessly settles inward to quieter levels of thinking, the body gains deep rest. Each session of meditation relieves tension, anxiety and depression and helps reduce the stress driven cycle of craving and overeating that underlies addiction.
Although drug and alcohol addiction may seem more severe, food addicts exhibit similar stress-related symptoms, including compulsive obsessive behavior and negative feelings associated with trying to control the addiction.
A recent study conducted at Yale University found a correlation between neural activity and food addiction similar to that seen in drug and alcohol addiction, where the brain's pleasure center is over activated.
Improving brain functioning
The neurological changes that take place during the TM technique strengthen communication between all parts of the brain, creating a pattern of synchrony and order associated with deep, inner contentment.
The transcendent joy of meditation, free of outer stimulation or sensory gratification, not only brings inner fulfillment but creates more balanced brain functioning. Those struggling with unhealthy eating behavior have found that regular TM practice increases happiness and emotional stability and can help break dependence on food as a coping mechanism or for gratification.
