The VedAroma line of organic essential oils was recently debuted at BioFach, the world's largest organic trade fair, in Germany. The oils garnered immediate interest, largely due to their purity and advanced distillation process.
Dr Atmane Kouider, one of the developers of the VedAroma line, mentioned that of the 140 essential oils on offer, most are certified organic. There are a few oils, such as Eucalyptus and Tea Tree, which are certified organic wild crafted, which means they are derived from wild-grown plants that have not undergone chemical treatment and have been harvested and distilled according to certified organic regulations.
This distillation process is crucial for maintaining the purity of the oils.
According to the VedAroma website:
'If an essential oil is distilled too quickly (at high pressure, high temperature), many of these precious elements are lost. In the organic process, slow distillation at lower temperatures ensures the maximum retention of active components in the oils, which contributes to their special aromatic and therapeutic effect.'
Distillation is usually done with water, but if a lower temperature distillation is required, then a solvent such as hexane is used. The boiling point of hexane is just 60 degrees Celsius. The hexane is completely removed, but its presence helps the low-temperature distillation.
Again, the website writes that the VedAroma oils 'are derived from plants that are grown without the use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides and they are distilled slowly and under low pressure to ensure maximum potency and effectiveness.'
In fact, the VedAroma oils are tested for their potency through gas chromatography, a process which analyzes a few drops of oil and reads and records all the compounds present in the oil.
Dr Kouider remarked that the distillation process and the presence of these compounds ensures the oils develop their full therapeutic value.
