Vietnam veteran Dan Burks shares a compelling account of fighting in Vietnam and his struggles to reintegrate into civilian life. Mr. Burks credits the Transcendental Meditation program with his recovery from Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS).
Mr. Burks remembers clearly the trauma of combat in Vietnam. After returning home to the United States, he battled to regain his life: ''No one at home realizes that you're always, always still in the rubber plantation of the jungle. You're always on an adrenaline high. You're looking to protect your buddies . . . protect yourself.''
PTS sent him into a tailspin: ''I stopped talking to my parents. I had really bad relationships with other people. I did not feel happiness, sorrow, or surprise. My feelings were gone.''
It was only after learning TM that Mr. Burks gained relief from PTS. ''It was the difference between heaven and hell. It was absolutely transformational. All that feeling of stress and all that feeling of heaviness—I could feel it melt away.''
