'The future is very bright' for alternative medicine approaches, including Maharishi Ayur-Veda. These were the remarks of Dr Stuart Rothenberg, speaking recently of the history of Maharishi Ayur-Veda. Dr Rothenberg is a medical doctor as well as an expert in Ayurveda, the world's oldest, most comprehensive system of natural medicine.*

On the change in acceptance of alternative or integrative medicine, Dr Rothenberg commented that 'the healthcare system has become more unsustainable,' and that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi foresaw this and spoke at great length many times about the inadequacy of the conventional medical system—'because unlike Maharishi Ayur-Veda it's not health oriented, it's not prevention oriented, so it just creates more cost and questions as it seeks answers,' he said.

'As a result, we all know the problems of the modern healthcare system and the enormous skyrocketing costs which threaten to bankrupt all the economies of the developed nations.'

Integrative medicine approaches, including Maharishi Ayur-Veda, are becoming increasingly recognized in the United States.

For example, the US healthcare legislation reform act 'incorporates language about integrative medicine, actually mandates that integrative medicine should be included in the healthcare system moving forward,' said Dr Rothenberg.

There is tremendous seeking and desire for solutions now across the board, even at very high levels of government, he continued. Maharishi Ayur-Veda, because it is so holistic and well-researched, is perfectly suited to fulfil that need.

Maharishi Ayur-Veda was one of the first alternative healthcare systems to be introduced to the West and it has 'maintained a very high level of knowledge and research and clinical experience', Dr Rothenberg said.

'We have an almost unprecedented 30 years of clinical experience with thousands and thousands of patients and their improvements documented.'

All this is in addition to the research and grants in support of Transcendental Meditation and Maharishi Ayur-Veda.**

Dr Rothenberg concluded by citing the 'unparalleled credibility' of Maharishi Ayur-Veda, which is opening these doors for its wide application as an effective, cost-effective health approach.

* Dr Rothenberg is National Director of Health Professional Training of Maharishi Ayur-Veda Association of America. Maharishi Ayur-Veda is the modern restoration by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi of the complete and authentic practice of Ayurveda as recorded in the Vedic texts.

** For example, the (US) National Institutes of Health has granted more than $24 million over the past 20 years to study the effects of Transcendental Meditation and other related programmes on cardiovascular disease.
