Stuart Rothenberg, MD, FAAFP, National Director of Health Professional Training of Maharishi Ayur-Veda Association of America, has been a leader in this field since Maharishi Mahesh Yogi first began bringing out the complete knowledge of Ayurveda in the early 1980s.

Dr Rothenberg was founding medical director of the first Maharishi Ayur-Veda clinics in the United States and has more than 25 years of experience in leading Maharishi Ayur-Veda training courses.

In a recent overview of the history and success of Maharishi Ayur-Veda, Dr Rothenberg talked about the early days, speaking of Maharishi's great foresight to bring out this knowledge of natural and holistic medicine decades before such medicine gained wide acceptance.

Dr Rothenberg trained as a teacher of the Transcendental Meditation Programme when he was in medical school in New York City in the mid-1970s. This began to pique his interest in alternative medicine approaches in addition to the modern medicine he was practising; but it wasn't until 1983 that he had a chance to study them.

When Maharishi came to Fairfield, Iowa, USA for a meditation course attended by 7,000 people, he wanted to inaugurate Ayurveda in the world.

Maharishi arrived for the course with some of the great leading Ayurveda experts of the age, including the renowned Dr B D Triguna and Dr V M Dwivedi.

Maharishi created a theme of health during the course and put great emphasis on it.

'He requested us, as the physicians . . . to start clinics and start teaching programmes in Ayurveda,' Dr Rothenberg remarked.

Maharishi invited the doctors 'to train with these wonderful professors and scholars and Vaidyas (expert Ayurvedic physicians) and charged us with that goal of inaugurating and introducing Ayurveda to the West.'

Global Good News will continue to feature Dr Rothenberg's report on Maharishi Ayur-Veda.
