In a recent overview of progress in the field of natural and integrative medicine, Stuart Rothenberg, MD spoke of great advances made due to a large paradigm shift in the Western world.

Dr Rothenberg is a classically trained medical doctor as well as an expert in the field of Ayurveda. He is Director of Health Professional Training Programs at the Maharishi Ayur-Veda Association of America, which focuses on Maharishi Ayur-Veda,* a more systematized and reliable approach to the ancient Ayurvedic medicine.

Dr Rothenberg spoke about a great shift which has occurred in the United States and Europe in the past 25 years. There has been a growing acceptance and even embracing of alternative medical approaches, and this new attitude has allowed great advances to be made in the field of health.

In his overview, Dr Rothenberg mentioned several results of this paradigm shift. He spoke of the changing attitudes of medical professional organizations and the National Institutes of Health in the US.

He talked about the success of Maharishi Ayur-Veda's partnership and training courses with Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine and the new advanced training courses in Maharishi Ayur-Veda which will be underway shortly.

In addition, Dr Rothenberg mentioned a recent conference on integrative medicine which featured his colleague in Maharishi Ayur-Veda, Nancy Lonsdorf, MD, giving the keynote speech. The speech was such a great success that the Maharishi Ayur-Veda representatives at the conference were overwhelmed by the interest and requests for more knowledge.

Lastly, Dr Rothenberg talked about a popular new initiative of the Maharishi Ayur-Veda Association of America to train health consultants in the field of Ayurveda. This initiative—the Maharishi Ayurveda Wellness Consultant Certificate Training Program—will address a growing need in the field of healthcare for practitioners who have the time and ability to educate patients and maintain long-term relationships with them.

According to Dr Rothenberg, such a programme 'fills a tremendous need now as the whole paradigm in healthcare is shifting to integrative medicine'.

Global Good News will continue to feature Dr Rothenberg's report.

* Ayurveda is the world's oldest continuously practiced tradition of medicine and has been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a valid and sophisticated system of natural healthcare. Maharishi Ayur-Veda is a modern revival of this ancient system, which offers comprehensive knowledge for the prevention and treatment of disease and slowing of the ageing process.
