Among a wealth of helpful information and knowledge about the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique featured on a new website—www.tm-ireland.org—about the programme in Ireland, are comments from physicians from Ireland, the UK and New Zealand about the health benefits of the practice, including its scientifically documented positive effects on hypertension and coronary heart disease.

The launch of the new website was reported in a recent article in Independent.ie.

Following are some of the physicians' comments posted on the new website:

''TM is very natural; it is holistic; it is safe; its effects are cumulative. Ultimately, what I like perhaps best of all, is that it represents a form of self-care. It has enormous dignity.''
—Dr. Michael Musgrave, MRCGP, General Practitioner UK

''Transcendental Meditation helps with treating hypertension. It is my experience that people with hypertension who learn TM not only feel better and happier, but their blood pressure is easier to control and I've been able to slowly reduce—and in a few cases even stop—their medication over time.

''There's no doubt that drugs have made a big impact on the treatment of coronary heart diseases, but still the greatest challenge is to find non-drug ways to help people improve their health habits, in terms of diet, exercise, smoking, in ways that will improve their health. Once people learn TM, we notice that they start to choose more healthy lifestyles and more healthy habits, and that they find it easier to give up smoking—and that alone would have a dramatic effect on heart disease. It's very rare to find someone who practises TM regularly and still smokes.''
—Dr Elizabeth Young, GP, London

''We know that Transcendental Meditation can reduce the level of persistent high blood pressure.''
—Dr. Risteard Mulcahy, Founder, Irish Heart Foundation, from 'Beat Heart Disease'

''In my own practice, as well as helping those with high blood pressure, I have helped patients with depression, migraine, . . . obesity and asthma, . . . by recommending that they learn TM.''
—Dr. David Lovell-Smith, from The Irish Examiner

''I think TM can give people self-confidence, which is not based on arrogance or hubris....I felt it gave me more stamina, less anxiety and an ability to put life in perspective when things threaten to overcome you.

''(In TM) . . . You are taken to that part of consciousness where the stillness borders on subconsciousness. You 'transcend' thought while remaining alert. Breathing and pulse rate fall and levels of stress-related chemicals and hormones also decline, as does your blood pressure.''
—Dr. William Weir, from The Daily Telegraph
