How Transcendental Meditation can improve your health

The Transcendental Meditation Programme is enjoying renewed interest, writes journalist Annie Stuart, who cites new research showing that this ancient practice can increase focus, decrease stress, and manage high blood pressure, among other health benefits.

The WebMD article highlights a broad range of research on Transcendental Meditation (TM), including a recent pilot study by Norman E. Rosenthal, M.D.,* clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical School, that found dramatically reduced symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in combat veterans who learned the technique.
'Before our research was over, three of our clinicians had gotten TM training,' the article quotes Dr Rosenthal as saying. 'That's how impressed they were with what they saw.'
Other research findings noted in the article include reduced stress and cardiovascular risk factors including high blood pressure and atherosclerosis; as well as improved brain functioning.
The article includes a section 'How to Practice TM'; however, one of the 'tips' it includes from Dr Rosenthal's book is to 'learn from an expert'—in other words, in the seven-step course given by certified Transcendental Meditation teachers, which ensures one is practising correctly. Also noted is Dr Rosenthal's point that 'TM should not be used as a replacement for needed health care.'
