Press Conference
Friday 6 May 11:00 am - 12 noon One Great George Street, Westminster, London SW1P 3AA DR NORMAN ROSENTHAL, world-renowned psychiatrist and scientist who first described seasonal affective disorder (SAD), will present his latest research into the use of Transcendental Meditation in bipolar disorder and combat related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). His new book, Transcendence: Healing
and Transformation Through Transcendental Meditation, will be released by Penguin on 2 June.*
''If this kind of result was observed for a new prescription drug, it would be a billion-dollar industry to make it available to everyone immediately.'' —Dr Rosenthal on the finding that heart attack, stroke and mortality rates were reduced by 47% in coronary patients who practised Transcendental Meditation—a 9-year study presented at the American Heart Association Conference in November 2009.
Dr Rosenthal will be pleased to take questions and to be interviewed after the press conference.
About Norman Rosenthal Dr Rosenthal pioneered the use of light therapy in the treatment of SAD, or ''winter blues'', during his career as an award-winning researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health in the USA. He has conducted extensive research into disorders of mood, sleep and biological rhythms, resulting in over 200 scholarly publications. He has recently suggested the use of Transcendental Meditation for the prevention and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, among other conditions.

About ''Transcendence'' Dr Norman E Rosenthal's new book, Transcendence: Healing and Transformation Through Transcendental Meditation, is garnering superlative reviews from diverse quarters.
Filmmaker David Lynch calls it, ''The best ever book on Transcendental Meditation: accessible and substantive, engaging and scientific, practical and profound. A very enjoyable read that can change your life, for good.''
Cardiac surgeon and media personality Mehmet Oz calls Transcendence ''a profoundly important book . . . . incredibly valuable . . . . a gift that will enlighten, entertain, and perhaps even transform.''
Rosenthal's broad ranging book will appeal both to newcomers, who want to know the basics about this ancient technique, and to seasoned meditators, wishing to broaden their knowledge and deepen their understanding about it.
By presenting a mix of fascinating stories, high-calibre research and his own clinical experience, Rosenthal illustrates the value of Transcendental Meditation in promoting cardiac health, reducing anxiety and depression, and helping people recover from drug and alcohol abuse. He devotes chapters to the benefits of Transcendental Meditation for helping children in inner-city schools, as well as for rehabilitating people who are often left behind, such as prisoners and homeless men and women.
But Rosenthal emphasises that Transcendental Meditation can help even highly successful people to live fuller and richer lives. He illustrates this in interviews with celebrities such as Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Martin Scorsese, Russell Brand and Laura Dern, all of whom have practised TM.
Rosenthal's central point is that because TM changes the brain, it can help a vast array of different people to live longer and better lives, and achieve lifelong success.
* Dr Rosenthal's new book is available now for pre-order: ISBN 9781585428731.
