Even with the many stressful situations people encounter in life, we 'may not have to suffer,' says film director Martin Scorsese, a practitioner of the Transcendental Meditation Programme.
'A lot of drama is projected onto the screen of our consciousness day and night,' he said, speaking at the David Lynch Foundation's Second Annual 'Change Begins Within' Benefit Gala in New York City on 13 December.
When we experience stress and anxiety 'the common response is to ''tough it out''—in other words to suffer,' he continued.
'I've been a firm believer in suffering all my life. My pictures are kind of volatile and they certainly can attest to to that.
'Yet recently I learned that you may not have to suffer . . . . It may not be the way it's supposed to be,' said the director who has been practising the Transcendental Meditation Programme for the past several years.
Transcendental Meditation has brought 'calm, clarity, [and] balance' into his life, Mr Scorsese said.
Research shows that among its wide-ranging benefits, Transcendental Meditation is a great way to reduce stress.
Mr Scorsese praised the David Lynch Foundation and its programmes for veterans,* students, homeless people, and other at-risk groups. 'I want to thank you,' he said, 'and I encourage all of you gathered here tonight to support this Foundation, David's Foundation.
* The Benefit Gala was part of the launch of ''Operation Warrior Wellness''—a national initiative to offer 10,000 veterans and their families a simple meditation practice for preventing and treating post-traumatic stress disorder.
