A special outreach programme in the United States has helped many families with children suffering from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) to benefit from practising the Transcendental Meditation Programme. A recent short documentary film relates the experience of one such family in San Diego, California.

Dr Sarina Grosswald* presented the video recently on Maharishi Global Family Chat.** In the film, a police officer, the father of a child with ADHD, gives his account of the benefits that Transcendental Meditation has brought to his son and entire family, as well as the dangers of medications often used to treat the disorder.

The father begins by recounting a time when he took his son's ADHD medication by accident, and then experienced negative side effects throughout the day, including shakiness, sweating, increased heart rate, and insomnia. After the incident, he decided to pursue alternative treatments for his son, and settled on Transcendental Meditation after researching the technique online and through physician friends.

After his whole family was instructed in TM—including himself, his wife, his older son who has ADHD, and his younger son—he observed noticeable benefits in the older son and in himself. 'For several weeks, my son was able to stop taking his medication entirely.' In himself, the father has noticed decreased anger and a greater sense of calm.

Dr Grosswald said that she intends to use this video, and others, to create broader awareness of the negative side effects of ADHD drugs, and of the pronounced benefits of Transcendental Meditation for the disorder.

'As demonstrated in this video, there is an especially profound effect when the entire family learns the programme together—it changes the dynamic within that family,' Dr Grosswald commented in conclusion.

* Sarina Grosswald, EdD, is an expert in cognitive learning who recently directed the first-of-its-kind research study on the effects of the Transcendental Meditation Programme on children with language-based learning disabilities. Dr Grosswald and her work have been extensively featured in the national media in the US, including PBS and ABC News.

** Dr Grosswald's report was featured on the 26 January 2010 Maharishi Global Family Chat, broadcast daily via Internet webcast on the Maharishi Channel, Channel 3. Podcasts of the daily Global Family Chat (audio track) are also now available for automatic download, via an RSS feed.
