Normalization and rejuvenation of the physiology through Transcendental Meditation: Dr Gary Kaplan
by Global Good News staff writer

21 October 2009
During the 10 October webinar on 'Overcoming Depression in a Recession through the Transcendental Meditation Program', Dr Gary Kaplan, a neurologist and Associate Professor of Neurology at New York University School of Medicine, discussed the overall value of Transcendental Meditation for health. Dr Kaplan described the state of deep rest gained during the practice, which, he said, has benefits for many common health ailments.
He commented that, in his own practice, depression and anxiety are the overlay for some of the complaints for which people visit neurologists, cardiologists, and other specialists.
Dr Kaplan explained that during the practice of Transcendental Meditation, one experiences thought on subtler and quieter levels of the mind in a very easy and natural way. As this happens, the physiology gains a very profound degree of rest.
He explained that as the mind settles down, the body also settles down, and the metabolic rate decreases. 'Blood pressures starts to reduce,' he said, 'and then we transcend* even the subtlest thought and arrive at the source of thought. It's a very blissful experience and a very expanding experience on the level of the mind. On the level of the physiology, a whole other style of functioning starts to take place.'
Dr Kaplan explained that brain wave studies have shown that during the process of transcending there is a new type of activity that occurs—called 'coherent activity'—in which the front and back of the brain start to work more in unison, as do the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
'At the same time, the body is receiving deep rest and the mind is very alert. There is an expansion of our conscious mind at that time,' he said.
As the body gains this state of deep rest, stress and strain is released: 'A lot of normalization and rejuvenation occurs,' he said. 'And because this state of restful alertness is very different from the rest we get during sleep or dreaming, the kind of accumulated stress that sleep and dreaming do not take care of, starts to be released by the body. '
The natural result, he said, is the things that over time have tended go awry in the body start to improve.
Global Good News will feature the conclusion of Dr Kaplan's presentation in the coming days.
* Transcending: The systematic settling down of the mind during Transcendental Meditation to experience increasingly refined levels of the thinking process, eventually going beyond the finest level of thinking to experience pure awareness, the silent, unbounded field of Transcendental Consciousness, the basis of the mind's activity. Maharishi's Technologies of Consciousness, including the Transcendental Meditation Programme, allow the individual to experience the effortless process of transcending in a systematic, reliable, repeatable manner.
