Meditation improves wellbeing of cancer patients
Cambodian Times Translate This Article
14 October 2009
On 14 October 2009 Cambodian Times reported:
A new study has shown the Transcendental Meditation Programme to be helpful for women with breast cancer. The study was conducted in the United States by Saint Joseph Hospital's Center for Healthy Aging--along with Northwestern University's Institute for Health Services, Research and Policy Studies; the Indiana State University department of psychology; and Maharishi University of Management's Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention.
It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring
fulfilment to the field of health.
The study of 130 breast cancer patients age 55 and over took place over a two-year period, with participants divided into two groups—one group practising Transcendental Meditation and a control group receiving standard treatment.
Quality of life was assessed at six-month intervals throughout the study, through such measures as the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast (FACT-B).
The Cambodian Times article quoted a senior researcher at the Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention (INMP), Maharishi University of Management, who was lead author on the study, as saying, 'The women in the study found their meditation practice easy to do at home and reported significant benefits in their overall quality of life.'
The results of this 'well-designed clinical trial and related studies suggest that effective stress reduction with the Transcendental Meditation program may be useful in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer' said Robert Schneider, INMP director, who co-authored the study.
Global Good News comment:
The study was published in the current issue of the peer-reviewed Integrative Cancer Therapies (Vol. 8, No. 3: September 2009).
