Using Transcendental Meditation to create a healthy, creative, and productive work force: Dr Nancy Liebler
by Global Good News staff writer

Dr Nancy Liebler, author of a new book, Healing Depression the Mind-Body Way, was the first speaker at the 7 October webinar: 'Overcoming Depression in a Recession through the Transcendental Meditation Program'.
Dr Liebler is a psychotherapist, teacher, and writer, with expertise in family therapy and the treatment of psychosomatic disorders. For many years she has been been addressing mainstream misunderstandings about depression. As an alternative to relying on medication or on-going talk therapy, she offers her patients Transcendental Meditation and natural medicine.
'We create a prosperous business environment by creating a healthy, vibrant, and creative workforce,' Dr Leibler said. Depression costs the United States $83 billion a year—$52 billion directly related to the effects of depressed individuals on the workplace.
She commented that 'the symptoms of depression are exactly opposite to the characteristics that comprise a healthy, successful employee. Employees need to feel interested in their activities and to work well in teams; to handle relationships and conflicts astutely; and to be able to focus and be alert, lively, and well rested.'
Dr Liebler discussed the side effects of medication for depression: 70% of people on such medications do not gain relief from their depression. 'Medications do not get to the root of the problem,' she said. 'At best, they alleviate some symptoms, sometimes.'
This disorder 'encompasses every aspect of our being—the physical, the mental, and the emotional,' she continued. 'To cure depression you need to provide the means to help people make a shift into an overall healthier state of being. . . . We need to utlilize interventions that work with the whole, not simply a part of the entirety.
'The Transcendental Meditation Technique is such an intervention,' she said. 'It is a scientifically proven technique which provides deep rest to the nervous system, to the entire body and mind; and through this deep rest, it triggers the innate healing potential of the mind-body.'
Citing the 600 research studies conducted in over 30 countries at top universities and institutions, showing the efficacy of the Transcendental Meditation Technique in many areas of life, Dr Liebler noted that business leaders who have instituted this practice for their employees are increasing the return on their investment as they create a healthy, creative, energetic, and productive work force.
'Very simply put,' Dr Leibler concluded, 'I'm saying if you provide meditation for your employees and you allow them to close their eyes and meditate for 15-20 minutes twice a day—they will be more alert, better able to focus on tasks, able to handle conflicts with a positive attitude, and will have decreased anxiety and increased energy. Meditating employees will give you the potential to maximize your return on your investment. And isn't that what business is all about?'
