On 9 October, psychotherapist Nancy Liebler, psychiatrist Norman Rosenthal, neurologist Gary Kaplan, and cardiologist Abraham Bornstein spoke on 'Overcoming Depression in a Recession' at the Center for Leadership Performance, 70 Broad Street, in Manhattan, New York. Dr Robert Roth introduced the webinar, giving a definition of Transcendental Meditation, a solution for the treatment of depression.

Opening the webcast, Dr Roth, a director of the Center, presented four experts—in the fields of psychotherapy, psychiatry, neurology, and cardiology—who would explore the issue of depression and how the simple technique of Transcendental Meditation can be used to help an individual overcome this disorder.

First Dr Roth gave a definition of Transcendental Meditation: It is a simple, easily learned mental technique, practised for about twenty minutes twice a day, sitting comfortably in a chair with the eyes closed.

'It's a quiet mental technique,' he said, 'that allows the active thinking mind to settle down and experience quieter levels of thought until the mind and body experience a unique state of restful alertness. As the mind settles down, the body gains a profound state of rest and relaxation, and we experience what has traditionally been called the experience of ''transcendence''*—deep, quiet, inner calm while the body is deeply rested and the mind is awake.'

That deep state of restful alertness eliminates the build-up of stress, tension, and fatigue that fuel so many disorders; it also develops the full potential of the brain.

'Meditation, traditionally, has not been [used] to address a single disorder,' he continued, 'but what we will look at today is how this simple technique—as a byproduct of developing the full brain, eliminating stress, and promoting health—can help an individual overcome depression.'

Dr Roth introduced the first speaker, Dr Nancy Liebler, author of a new book, Healing Depression the Mind-Body Way, and psychotherapist, teacher, and writer, with expertise in family therapy and the treatment of psychosomatic disorders. Her presentation at the webinar will be featured by Global Good News in the coming days.

Replays of the conference may be viewed online at TMBusiness.org.

* Transcendence: Experience of the silent, unbounded field of pure, Transcendental Consciousness at the basis of all the mind's activity. Regular practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique allows the direct experience of Transcendental Consciousness in an effortless, systematic, and repeatable way.
