On the Maharishi Channel's Global Family Chat, Raja Dr Michael Dillbeck recently discussed a new scientific research study published in the March issue of American Journal of Hypertension, which showed that Transcendental Meditation is one of the most effective treatments available for reducing high blood pressure.
'This study has had an enormous impact on the worldwide media, motivated by the fact that cardiovascular disease is still the number one disease in the most parts of the world', said Dr Dillbeck.
The study was conducted by James Anderson, professor of Medicine at the University of Kentucky's College of Medicine, and the main finding was a significant reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
The University of Kentucky's press release stated, 'TM is an effective treatment for controlling high blood pressure with the added benefit of bypassing possible side effects and hazards of anti-hypertension drugs, according to a new meta-analysis. Blood pressure reductions of this magnitude would be expected to be accompanied by significant reductions in the risk of cardiovascular disease without side effects.'
'Adding TM is about the equivalent to adding a second anti-hypertensive agent to one's current regimen', professor Anderson said. 'Only safer and less troublesome.'
Anderson's most recent findings reinforce an earlier study that found the Transcendental Meditation Technique produced a statistically significant reduction in high blood pressure that was not found with other forms of relaxation, meditation, bio-feedback, or stress management.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (an agency of the US federal government) estimates that one out of three American adults has high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases one's chances of developing heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, and kidney disease.
'So this was an important meta-analysis and it reinforces in a very dramatic way the clear perception in the medical community of the effects of Transcendental Meditation for the number one health problem in most countries of the world,' Dr Dillbeck concluded.
