31 March 2005
Robert Schneider, director of the University's Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention, was recently honored by being inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the foremost professional designation for heart specialists in the U.S.
Dr. Schneider received his new designation in early March at a convocation ceremony during the ACC's Annual Scientific Session. Approximately 30,000 member cardiologists attended the event held in Orlando, Florida.
'I've been researching, practicing, and teaching Maharishi's principles of applied preventive cardiology for almost 25 years, so it was natural to be awarded the recognition of the ACC,' Dr. Schneider said. 'It was a recognition of the groundbreaking accomplishments of the Institute team in the area of prevention-oriented natural medicine.'
The main goal of the American College of Cardiology is to promote excellence in cardiovascular care. Election to fellowship in the College is based in part on letters of sponsorship from other Fellows of the ACC and from medical school faculty attesting to professional competence and excellence.
'It's an honor to be a Fellow of the American College of Cardiologists, and I certainly supported Dr. Schneider,' said Brian Olshansky, professor of medicine and cardiology at the University of Iowa. 'I think it's good to have him as a member, as a contributor, and I look forward to good things in the future.' Dr. Olshansky was one of Dr. Schneider's sponsors and has collaborated with the Institute on prevention research.
ACC Fellows are appointed based on their outstanding credentials, achievements, and community contribution to cardiovascular medicine. Physicians elected to fellowship can use F.A.C.C. (Fellow of the American College of Cardiology) as a professional designation. Fellows are cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, researchers, and academicians.
'This designation is a larger acknowledgement of the work we're doing at Maharishi University of Management for the prevention of this epidemic of modern times, cardiovascular disease, and for the creation of a disease-free society,' Dr. Schneider said.
