Georgia, located in the Caucasus region at the crossroads of southeastern Europe and western Asia, was represented at an international training course in Consciousness-Based Education in the Netherlands this past year.

During the course, held at Maharishi European Research University (MERU), participants learned about Consciousness-Based Education and how to bring the benefits of this award-winning system of education to their schools at home. One of four participants from Georgia is the principal of a school where a group of students practise Transcendental Meditation as part of the curriculum.

In addition to educating students in traditional subjects, the goal of Consciousness-Based Education is to systematically develop students' full creative potential, through the daily practice of Transcendental Meditation and its advanced programmes. The founder of Consciousness-Based Education, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who began teaching Transcendental Meditation over 50 years ago, revised or expanded many of the principles that guided education in the past, bringing out new principles based on a more complete understanding of the nature, range, and development of human consciousness.

Several experts in Consciousness-Based Education have visited Georgia in the past year. At one university, Dr Ashley Deans, Executive Director of Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment in the USA, spoke to a 'packed house' of students and faculty in a Theatre and Cinema class. Dr Deans has toured the world introducing the concept of Consciousness-Based Education and Stress-Free Schools to educators, students, and parents. Invariably his presentations are received with great enthusiasm and interest.

Legendary filmmaker David Lynch, founder of the David Lynch Foundation, connected to the same meeting by Skype, addressing the group and answering questions about his recently released documentary film, Meditation, Creativity, Peace. The film chronicles his 16-country tour of film schools in Europe and the Middle East in 2007, during which he addressed thousands of students about his creative process, filmmaking, and his 40-year practice of Transcendental Meditation.

Meetings have also been held in the country with leading educators in the field of medicine, who expressed interest in learning more about Maharishi Ayur-Veda and potentially integrating knowledge from the world's oldest, most comprehensive system of natural health care into medical training programmes.

At another meeting with a sports official, the importance of establishing a group of Transcendental Meditation practitioners to create coherence in national consciousness was well received. During the last year 60 Georgians learned Transcendental Meditation. According to the scientific formula derived by researchers in this field, Georgia, with a population of 5 million, needs about 250 people practising the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme in order to create a state of lasting peace, harmony, and progress for the country.
