Dr Girish Varma, director of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's programmes in India, is Chairman of the Maharishi Vidya Mandir Schools Group and head of many other education initiatives in the country.* He spoke recently about developments in Consciousness-Based Education in India in the last year.
Dr Varma talked first about Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Vedic University, known in India as Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Vedic Vishwavidyalaya. The university is one of the largest in the world that incorporates Consciousness-Based Education, with 77,000 students and 3,000 faculty and staff. It has 9 campuses, 852 associate institutions, and 780 information and admissions centres.
Dr Varma, who is Chancellor of the university, summarized its range of 56 programmes, from undergraduate to PhD, covering a variety of disciplines including Maharishi Vedic Science, health, management, computer science, arts, commerce, and education.
The university also has a department of Maharishi Ayur-Veda health care.** 'This year the Ayur-Veda department of the university has started two new programmes which are being offered for the first time in the world,' Dr Varma said.
These are a two-year fulltime master's degree programme in Ayurvedic Dietetics and a three-month diploma programme in Panchakarma (rejuvenation therapy) for qualified practising doctors.
At the geographical centre (Brahmasthan) of India, the international campus of the university has organized courses or seminars, ranging in length from one week to three months. So far, over 600 participants from 42 countries have enjoyed the courses.
Maharishi Vedic University has just completed four new office buildings and one new academic building block at that campus. With this construction and continuing large enrolment numbers, Dr Varma said that this institution continues to be the largest Maharishi University in the world.
'I'm sure the university will continue to grow and impart knowledge to much larger numbers of students and their families,' he concluded.

** Ayurveda is the world's oldest, most comprehensive system of natural medicine, which originated in the Vedic civilization of ancient India and is now officially recognized by the World Health Organization. Maharishi Ayur-Veda is the modern restoration by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi of the complete and authentic practice of Ayurveda as recorded in the Vedic texts.
