In the early 1990s, when Maharishi Vedic University was being established in Cambodia, the university received valuable help and support from members of the government.
In a recent interview, Dr Lee Fergusson, one of the founding rectors of the university, described its beginnings. He and Dr Anna Bonshek are co-authors of a new book about the university and the history of modern education in the country.
In the complex political situation in the wake of the destructive and violent Khmer Rouge regime, Dr Fergusson explained, King Sihanouk, who had been deposed from power, returned to Cambodia and gave his support to the Royal Government, and was reinstated as king in 1993.
'One of the unique features of Cambodia,' Dr Fergusson said, 'is that it is one of the only countries in the world that I'm aware of . . . that went from a sort of dictatorship and a time of war and strife, went through democratic elections, elected a government, and actually reinstalled a monarchy. . . . The first free and fair elections were held in 1993, the year Maharishi Vedic University was established.'
Officials in the new government gave their support to the establishment of Maharishi Vedic University. Dr Fergusson gave special recognition to the contributions of His Excellency Dr Ung Huot.
Dr Huot received his PhD in Melbourne, Australia, after fleeing from the Khmer Rouge. Upon returning to Cambodia in the early 1990s, he became Minister of Communications, then Minister of Education, and was then invited to be Prime Minister of the country alongside Hun Sen.
Currently a senator in the Cambodian parliament, Dr Huot wrote the Foreword to the new book, Maharishi Vedic University in Cambodia: Educational Reconstruction and Social Renewal.
