'In Thailand we have many girls who lack opportunity for proper education,' said Acharn Yai, the Director and Principal of the Dhammajarinee Witthaya School in Thailand.

The school, founded by Buddhist nuns, is for disadvantaged girls from provinces all over Thailand. It is the first and only school of its kind in the country.

'[The students] come from poor families or broken homes', Acharn Yai said. Some are orphans who have been abused and subject to violence, or are at risk of exploitation.

In Thailand, Acharn is a title of respect, bestowed upon the highest teachers. And it's clear to any visitor that all the students at the Dhammajarinee Witthaya School greatly respect the soft-spoken Acharn Yai. She runs the school with love and warmth and seems to know each smiling face.

One of the young students at the school, a girl from a poor family in northern Thailand, explained how important the school is for her and her family.

'My father says that when he was young, he had no books, no learning, no school. He couldn't be comfortable in life. When it came to my generation, the family had no money and he thought, ''How can I send my daughter to school?'' '

This is where the Dhammajarinee Witthaya School stepped in by offering education to girls who otherwise could not afford it and a refuge to girls in dangerous, high-risk situations.

Besides a safe space and education, another tool the school provides to the young girls is the technique of Transcendental Meditation. The simple, easily-learned meditation technique relieves stress and improves focus and creativity, assisting the girls in their recovery from trauma and improving their schoolwork simultaneously.

Several students commented on their experience with Transcendental Meditation.

Said Kwan, age 15, 'Meditation has broadened my thinking, increased my self-confidence, and now I'm more diligent.'
