Nearly 40 years ago Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment (MSAE) opened it doors, the first K-12 school in the world to offer the comprehensive curriculum known as Consciousness-Based Education. Since then the school has grown from a single room with a handful of students to become a large, diverse student body housed in a beautiful building designed according to Maharishi Vastu architecture.

Students are attracted to Maharishi School in Fairfield, Iowa, in the United States, because it is unique in many ways, said Head of School Dr Richard Beall recently. Besides the Consciousness-Based Education curriculum the school has a strong sense of community, both within the student body and between the students and their teachers. They appreciate and support one another. This underlying common bond is one of many significant differences between MSAE and other schools.

The addition of the Boarding School programme has brought international students, as well as those from other parts of the US, to the school in the last few years, and given the student body a new dimension. Currently there are 28 boarding students in the rapidly expanding programme. Of that number, 18 are from China.

The Host Family programme, which is part of the Boarding School programme, has also been very successful. Local Maharishi University of Management or Maharishi School families invite an international student to live with them during the course of their study abroad. Families have a wonderful intercultural opportunity to become acquainted with young students. And the students enjoy a welcoming home environment where they have the opportunity to practise English, in addition to their Consciousness-Based Education experience at school. Plans include the continued expansion of the international boarding student programme.

Equipment has been set up for video connections between MSAE students in the USA and fellow Maharishi School students in Uganda and Bali.

School administrators for Victoria School in Victoria, British Columbia, have announced that two new classrooms are being added, and the school plans to add one grade per year until they reach the 12th grade. Victoria School, an independent school and the only Maharishi School in Canada, has been operating as a Maharishi School for 22 years, offering classes in grades K-6.

Dr Bevan Morris, President of Maharishi University of Management, commented that he has observed the growth of inner intelligence in the students, starting from kindergarten when they are practising the children's Transcendental Meditation technique,* later on with Transcendental Meditation, and finally the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi programme when they become teenagers.

* A special form of Transcendental Meditation practised by children under the age of 10.
