When Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment (MSAE) was established nearly 40 years ago, its goal was to create graduates well-versed in the broad traditional fields of education, who would also live complete inner fullness.

MSAE in Fairfield, Iowa, USA, was the first, 'flagship' Maharishi School, which inspired the founding of many others around the world. Its curriculum offers students '200% of education'—full inner development through all the approaches of Consciousness-Based Education, along with the best of conventional educational approaches, said Head of School Dr Richard Beall recently.

At the heart of Consciousness-Based Education is Transcendental Meditation. Students practise the technique twice each day at school. Dr Beall has seen that through their daily practice students discover the core of silence within their mind, while at the same time the deep rest they gain from Transcendental Meditation dissolves stresses and improves their brain functioning.

One principle of the school is that students should 'stretch but not stress'. The academic aspect of Maharishi School education is designed to be challenging, so that students know that they are doing their best possible work, Dr Beall said. But the small class size allows a high quality one-on-one interaction between students and teachers. This is a school where children can come and, in a supportive environment, 'figure out who they are as a person', one teacher said.

Last year MSAE students won state championships and other awards in robotics, poetry, Destination ImagiNation, drama, and science. One senior who performed extremely well on the national Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) also became a National Merit Scholar finalist. The tennis team has reigned as champions for many years.

Students graduate with a love of learning. Ninety-five per cent of graduates are accepted to four-year colleges.

Inspired by her visit to Maharishi School, Oprah Winfrey produced a comprehensive video report detailing her new understanding of Consciousness-Based Education.* Among older students she interviewed were several who had recently enrolled in the school and agreed that Consciousness-Based Education 'changed the trajectory' of their lives. After talking with several Middle School girls, Oprah applauded the whole group, saying, 'You're leading the world, you're changing the world.'

Students, teachers, parents, and graduates would all agree that this perfectly describes the value of Maharishi School and Consciousness-Based Education.

* The segment was featured last March in an hour-long show about Fairfield, Iowa, home of Maharishi School, on Oprah's OWN network.
