A new website for Maharishi University of Management (MUM) was launched late last month, featuring not only a complete redesign, but also greater functionality and a new focus on portals for each class of users: prospective students, current students, faculty and staff, trustees, administrators, donors, and alumni.

The student portal will also offer information such as activities and events on the campus in Fairfield, Iowa, USA, and student government news. And it includes a social media function that lets students chat with or message each other.

Another major purpose of the new site is to make it easy for people to add content thanks to the implementation of a content management system called Magic Hour. ''It allows more people to contribute and creates more efficient communication within the University and with the public,'' said Paul Stokstad, who headed the redesign. ''The goal is a design that facilitates a frictionless flow of information.''

The empowerment extends beyond access to information and easy authoring of content. In a sense it's also a personal portal for every user. ''This is a very special feature of the site,'' said Mr. Stokstad, who is MUM director of marketing. ''Each user of the site can have an account that they use to manage their area of the site. . . . The new site is user-centric rather than institution-centric. Students today expect this kind of functionality.''

In keeping with today's trends, the home page of the site features a Twitter feed of the latest MUM-related tweets from students and others.

Another new feature is an interactive campus map that includes video tours of buildings, including the Argiro Student Center, Sustainable Living Center, Maharishi School, and the Domes.*
