Dr Helen Evans, director of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) Programme in Wales, recently wrote an article about a research study being conducted on students who practise the technique. The article is titled: 'Sussex pilot study on TM in schools', and explains how Dr Evans began the project as well as describing some preliminary anecdotes from the study.
Dr Evans teaches Transcendental Meditation but also trained in education for children with emotional and behavioural difficulties. Together with a child psychiatrist and lecturer in psychiatry at Brighton Medical School in the UK, she has started a project in a Brighton-area school.
The school is a specialized school for children who are emotionally disturbed or have learning disabilities and behavioural difficulties.
In the project, both teachers and students are learning Transcendental Meditation, and medical students from Brighton Medical School are researching the effects on the young students. When the study is completed, the medical students expect to publish the findings in a medical journal.
Dr Evans reported that she started off teaching a select few of the teachers and staff at the school, and they all had very good experiences with the programme. Soon all the other teachers wanted to learn as well.
The students meditate with the staff morning and evening, twice a day, and they have been noticing remarkable positive effects.
Dr Evans reported that one boy said that he could think clearly for the first time in his life.
One girl, in her mid-teens, had had very traumatic experiences in her family life. She said she hadn't felt any peace for years and years. But after learning Transcendental Meditation, she felt there was a 'black hole' in her mind that was eating up all the negativity that was always present. She felt that the meditation practice 'ate up all the negativity' until there was just complete peace.
