About two years ago, a group of 40 people who work with the Economic Development and AIDS Prevention Organization (EDAPO) in Kampala, Uganda learned the Transcendental Meditation Technique. Ever since this one group has learned, the whole organization has seen the benefits.
EDAPO provides food, shelter, education, and basic medical care to over 600 children orphaned by the HIV/AIDS epidemic and warfare, over half of whom are also living with HIV/AIDS.
Since seeing the benefits of the Transcendental Meditation Programme, the director of the organization, Mark Mugabe, and the others have become enthusiastic about its potential to help the children under their care.
As a result, the organization has developed a small primary school which is teaching about 200 children at present. The organization is committed to making it a Consciousness-Based school and continuing the children's schooling by creating a Consciousness-Based secondary school.
This year, with the support of a small grant from the David Lynch Foundation, 80 of the elder children were able to learn the Transcendental Meditation Technique.
In addition, said Henry Matovu,* co-founder of EDAPO who is also a teacher of Transcendental Meditation, they are now teaching '75 of the guardians of the 120 younger kids', so that these children can learn the meditation technique specially designed for young children. This way, all the children will have a technique to practise when they are at school.
Over 120 of the members, staff, and parents of EDAPO are now practising Transcendental Meditation, supported by the Seeds of Heaven organization. (The Photos section on the EDAPO page on Facebook® shows students and others meditating together.)
Another good development for EDAPO is that one of their schoolteachers recently became an instructor of Transcendental Meditation. This teacher is now a valuable resource who will be able to assist more children and members of the organization as they learn Transcendental Meditation.
