For 25 years, the first Maharishi School in England has been demonstrating the success of Consciousness-Based Education.
The school, based in Lancashire, became one of the first 24 Free Schools in the UK in September and roughly doubled in size. About 140 local children and their parents learned the Transcendental Meditation Technique as part enrolling in the school.
'It's been so fulfilling to teach such a large group of lovely, appreciative families, some of whom we've known for many years as neighbours, acquaintances, or shopkeepers,' said Janet Ayliffe, a Transcendental Meditation teacher in the area, commenting on the progress of these new students and families involved in Maharishi Free School.
After learning Transcendental Meditation, the children sat with their parents through all the follow-up meetings in the four-day meditation course and loved it.
'One boy commented he was sorry the course was ending after the four days and would miss coming back for the next evening.'
As the children settled into Maharishi Free School, they really began to love it. 'There are so many stories of waves of happiness and relief from stress, both from the children and from the parents,' Ms Ayliffe said.
In fact, two upper school students told a teacher that they would like to attend school on the weekends as well. A few students have also reported that they would like to have a Maharishi Ayur-Veda health consultation as their Christmas present.
'Parents recall that even if their children feel unwell, they still want to go to school. These are children who have never liked school in the past.'
Ms Ayliffe also spoke of one particular set of parents who 'said that their son had always disliked homework, but now he just does it by himself. They were amazed to find him reading a book quietly on his bed the other day.'
