22 November 2011
Dr Fred Travis, world-renowned scientist and Director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition at Maharishi University of Management, recently returned from a twelve-day, nine-city lecture tour in Germany. While there, he spoke at several prestigious universities, conferences, and hospitals.
Dr Travis said his trip started simply, with an invitation to speak about different types of meditation and their effects on the brain at the Yoga Vidya Conference in Bad Meinberg. Soon, more and more cities and venues were added to the list.
Once word spread that Dr Travis was coming to Germany, teachers of the Transcendental Meditation Programme began to make arrangements for him to speak at universities and hospitals around the country.
Though each lecture was unique, Dr Travis mentioned that there was a common core to all the talks. He spoke of the identification of three types of meditation, characterized by different EEG brain wave patterns: automatic self-transcending, focused attention, and open monitoring. In addition, he talked about higher states of consciousness and their powerful transformational effect on the brain.
Dr Travis also followed a similar structure in each venue, speaking for a few minutes then taking questions to ensure the audience members were grasping the more abstract points of his lectures.
Dr Travis was impressed with the intellectual acuity of the audiences he spoke to. They asked deep, probing questions that showed they understood the heart of his lectures.
He commented on the 'incredible intellectual power of the German people. They were able to penetrate the abstraction of pure consciousness* purely from the level of the intellect.'
The talks were well-received across the country. Students, faculty members, doctors, and scientists attended the lectures, many remarking on the profundity of the content and many expressing deep interest in the points Dr Travis made.
Global Good News will continue to report on Dr Travis's tour of German universities.
* The silent, unbounded field of pure intelligence at the basis of the mind's activity—the state of transcendental consciousness which can be experienced directly through the Transcendental Meditation Technique.
