On September 12, 2011, Maharishi University of Management (MUM), Fairfield, Iowa, USA, celebrated the 40th anniversary of its founding. During the celebration, present and former leaders of the university reflected on the goals of its Founder, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, for the institution and its many successes during the last four decades.

Speakers at the event included Dr Robert Keith Wallace, the first president of MUM, who was the first to present the idea for the university to Maharishi in the early 1970s. Dr John Hagelin spoke about his experience lecturing on Consciousness-Based Education at a university in California, and the overwhelmingly positive response from educators there. Dr Bevan Morris, current president of the university, spoke about his years as president since 1980, and of his perspective on Consciousness-Based Education through the eyes of people throughout the world—who view MUM as a model to which they aspire.

MUM was originally established in 1973 as Maharishi International University (MIU) in Santa Barbara, California. The idea emerged from Maharishi's formulating of a new science that would offer a complete, systematic understanding of consciousness—the Science of Creative Intelligence (SCI)—a discipline which was developed into the first courses offered at MIU. In 1974, the university moved to Fairfield, having purchased the campus of the former Parsons College. Since then, MUM has expanded greatly, with exceptional academic departments in many areas including computer science, business, and sustainable living.

In a video made near the time of MUM's founding, which was shown at the anniversary celebration, Maharishi explained that the purpose in establishing the university was to give students the opportunity to explore the subject of knowledge—the Self—in addition to the object of knowledge, which up until then was all that was offered in education. Maharishi said: '. . . . when the knower is in ignorance about himself, the whole structure of knowledge is as if baseless. The foundation of knowledge is the consciousness of the knower, is the knower. But if the knower is in dark, the knower doesn't know himself, it's very obvious that the whole structure of knowledge, the whole field of knowledge, has no basis to it. And such baseless knowledge can only be non-fulfilling. . . . It's now high time that we provide the knowledge of the knower, along with the knowledge of all disciplines.'
