The article features excerpts from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's first book, Science of Being and Art of Living, in which he gives a profound analysis of the current state of education in the world, and the great need for education that opens the students' awareness to the 'more substantial aspects of inner life which form the very basis of all the outer life and existence'.
Maharishi describes with great clarity and insight the shortcomings of modern education, which only gives students knowledge on the surface level of information. 'There is nothing precise in the field of education today which will really develop the inner values of mind, body and spirit. . . . The current system of education prepares the student only for a recognized career in the society primarily for earning a living.'
'It is now high time that, along with the outer fields of the different branches of learning, education be provided to the students in the inner spheres of life,' Maharishi writes, explaining how the Transcendental Meditation Technique meets the need of every country for education that cultures the mind from within—satisfying the students' thirst for knowledge.
'This is an education which will not leave any door of knowledge closed for the mind and which will enable every student to have command of the full knowledge of the subject. Then the citizens of the world will really derive benefit from what we call education.'
