The article, by Craig Pearson, PhD, considers the life of distinguished American public figure Helen Keller (1880-1968) in light of the experience and knowledge of transcending.
Though blind and deaf from an early age, Helen Keller emerged from her world of darkness and silence to become celebrated as one of the greatest women of her time, and of history.
Dr Pearson includes beautiful descriptions of Helen's inner experiences in her own words, which indicate she experienced a transcendental level of the mind. She describes this as 'the flame of eternity in my soul.' In this deep inward place, she experiences 'the splendor that binds all things of earth to all things of heaven'. 'Even though she is blind and deaf, confined by ''silence and darkness,'' she nevertheless experiences an inner light that transcends death,' Dr Pearson writes. He quotes passages in which she recognizes this deep inner field as 'Absolute', the source of truth and order, a field of perfection and totality—'the world of eternal beauty'.
These descriptions, Dr Pearson comments, remind one of the settling down of the mind during the Transcendental Meditation Technique—leading to the experience of 'consciousness in its pure state—an ocean of pure wakefulness, the silent, unbounded field from which all thoughts and feelings arise.' He considers in depth this experience of 'the Absolute' from the perspectives of Maharishi's Vedic Science, modern physics, and scientific research on the Transcendental Meditation Programme.
'As we develop our full creative potential through regular Transcendental Meditation practice,' he concludes, 'we can meet challenges with increasing ease, while becoming anchored to the shining Self within.'
