Madame Simone Comarmond, a distinguished leader in government and women's education in Africa, gave the Commencement Address at the Maharishi University of Enlightenment graduation ceremonies on 24 June.
Mme Comarmond is currently Chair of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) and Chair of the Commonwealth Foundation, working to improve educational opportunities for young girls and women throughout Africa. Her activities include promotion of programmes for education, healthcare, preservation of the environment, and traditional cultures throughout the British Commonwealth. She has served in many government positions in the Seychelles, including Secretary of State, Minister for Education, Tourism and Civil Aviation, and for Tourism and Transport.
Madame Comarmond has been practising the Transcendental Meditation Programme for more than 15 years.
'How much more powerful will be the effect on society when women and girls are educated to use the full potential of their consciousness,' said Madame Comarmond in her address, '—educated to use not just a few laws of nature, but to have the regular experience of opening their awareness to the home of all the laws of nature, the Unified Field of consciousness. Then they will pass on to their children the knowledge of how to avoid the mistakes and suffering that come from the violation of Natural Law. . . .'
Madame Comarmond was the first of two commencement speakers during the global MUE graduation webcast, speaking from MERU, Holland. She had visited MERU in 2008 and was very inspired, she said, by the vision and activities of the Global Mother Divine Organization.* On the basis of her own experience of the expansion of consciousness and deep rest gained during Transcendental Meditation, 'the missing element in education can be brought to light by this effortless and enjoyable technique,' she said during her address.
Madame Comarmond pointed out that consciousness is the birthright of everyone, but so far it has been hidden from view. 'The role of education is to teach students that which they do not know. Consciousness-Based Education brings to light the field of consciousness, so that it can be used to enrich every field of life. . . .'
Developing countries, especially in Africa, are beginning to recognise the importance and great reward to educating their girls, Madame Comarmond continued, but still it only unfolds a fraction of their full potential. 'How much more they could achieve if we could give them a technique to use the whole ocean of their minds,' she said.
The mothers are the first teachers, she said, sometimes the only teachers in the lives of their children. A mother who is educated guarantees the effect of other children being educated. 'With more information and skills [a mother] is empowered to make more intelligent use of her surroundings leading to better health and greater prosperity for her family and community.'
The graduates of this institution, Maharishi University of Enlightenment, have the knowledge of consciousness, the knowledge that is needed by the whole world, Madame Comarmond said. She told the graduating students, 'You are the experts who have been trained in this field. Knowledge of consciousness is the crucial missing ingredient that can bring real fulfilment to the whole field of development....
'When we are united and act together, we have greater force to mould the future that we collectively seek. Now is the time, now is the hour and we can do it within our lifetime.'
* 'Mother Divine' refers to the nourishing, evolutionary power of Natural Law lively within all of creation and within the silent consciousness of everyone. The Global Mother Divine Organization, established in December 2007, is the ladies' wing of the Global Country of World Peace.
